The museum born in 1866 , when a group of Americans in Paris decided to create the institution to bring art and art education to the citizens.

In 1870 it opened to the public – has been in the current building since 1880 – being a Roman sarcophagus its first acquisition.

The building was designed by Calvert Vaux – designer Central Park – y Jacob Wrey Mould . The building has been surrounded by new construction to enlarge the museum.

The museum is divided into 19 collections among which are: the American Wing, Egyptian Art, Greek and Roman Art, Medieval Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts Collection Robert Lehman, Weapons, Islamic Art, Asian Art, Drawings and Paintings, Musical Instruments … plus special exhibitions halls.
